An ancient legend of Peru’s largest indigenous Ashaninka tribe tells the story of the vilcacor as follows: A hunter from the Ashaninka tribe went to the forest to provide food for his family. After a long and strenuous hunt, however, he was still without a single catch. He staggered through the jungle with only the rest of his strength when he saw a bomb tearing the creeper with its claws and drinking the sap flowing from it. Then a cougar filled with new force caught the deer. The hunter followed the example of the bomb, also drank the sap of a miraculous vine and fell asleep. Upon awakening, he found himself full of strength and immediately caught a large armadillo. Since then, vilcacora has been recognized as a holy plant. The Ashaninks believe that the discovery of the vilcacora is not a coincidence, but shown to them by God through a bomb that they have since stopped hunting and worshiped.

Perhaps thanks to this legend, vilcacora is called Uňa de Gato in Spanish. Rather, the name is derived from the curved thorns growing on a vine, which resembles cat claws in appearance. However, of all plants of the genus Uncaria, only two (Uncaria guinansis and Uncaria tomenthosa) are used in phytotherapy, of which Uncaria tomenthosa contains more active substances and is preferred for its wider range of uses.

Une ancienne legende de la plus grande tribu indigene Ashaninka du Perou raconte l’histoire du vilcacor comme suit : Un chasseur de la tribu Ashaninka est alle dans la foret pour nourrir sa famille. Cependant, apres une chasse longue et ardue, il etait toujours sans une seule prise. Il a titube a travers la jungle avec seulement le reste de ses forces quand il a vu une bombe dechirer la plante grimpante avec ses griffes et boire la seve qui en coulait. Puis un couguar rempli d’une nouvelle force a attrape le cerf. Le chasseur a suivi l’exemple de la bombe, a egalement bu la seve d’une vigne miraculeuse et s’est endormi. Au reveil, il s’est retrouve plein de force et a immediatement attrape un gros tatou. Depuis lors, la vilcacora est reconnue comme une plante sacree. Les Ashaninks croient que la decouverte de la vilcacora n’est pas une coincidence, mais que Dieu leur a montre a travers une bombe qu’ils ont depuis arrete de chasser et veneree.

Peut-etre grace a cette legende, vilcacora s’appelle Una de Gato en espagnol. Le nom est plutot derive d’epines courbees poussant sur une vigne, qui ressemblent en apparence a des griffes de chat. Cependant, de toutes les plantes du genre Uncaria, seules deux (Uncaria guinansis et Uncaria tomenthosa) sont utilisees en phytotherapie, parmi lesquelles Uncaria tomenthosa contient plus de substances actives et est preferee pour son plus large eventail d’utilisations.

Od tech dob je vilcacora uznavana jako svata rostlina. Ashaninkove veri, ze objeveni vilcacory neni nahoda, nybrz jim ji ukazal buh, a to prostrednictvim pumy, kterou od te doby prestali lovit a zacali uctivat.

Mozna diky teto legende nese vilcacora ve spanelstine nazev Una de Gato. Spise je vsak nazev odvozen od zahnutych trnu rostoucich na liane, ktere svym vzhledem pripominaji prave kocici drapky. Ze vsech rostlin rodu Uncaria jsou vsak pouze dve (Uncaria guinansis a Uncaria tomenthosa) uzivany ve fytoterapii, z toho Uncaria tomenthosa obsahuje ucinnejsi latky a pro svuj vetsi rozsah pouziti je preferovana.
