Chris Ryan was born near Newcastle in 1961. He joined the 22nd SAS Regiment in 1984. During his ten years of service, he participated in a number of combat and classified operations. He was the commander of the snipers within the counterterrorism team. During the Gulf War, he was the only eight-man unit to escape from Iraq after a failed operation. Three of his colleagues died at the time, four fell into captivity. Chris Ryan was awarded the Military Medal for the longest escape from the enemy in SAS history.

Byl velitelem odstřelovačů v rámci protiteroristického týmu. Během První války v Perském zálivu byl jediným z osmičlenné jednotky, kterému se po neúspěšné akci podařilo uniknout z území Iráku. Tři jeho kolegové tehdy zahynuli, čtyři padli do zajetí. Chris Ryan byl oceněn Vojenskou medailí za nejdelší únik před nepřítelem v dějinách SAS.
