A novel set in an exotic environment after the occupation of Abyssinia by Italian soldiers. The hero of the story, a young officer, a man from intellectual circles unprepared for war, sleeps with an indigenous girl and accidentally injures her. Later, he begins to worry that he has contracted leprosy and is experiencing other signs of leprosy in his excitement. He commits many hasty acts, theft and crime, and spends many days in excruciating fear of punishment that does not come.

Roman odehravajici se v exotickem prostredi po obsazeni Habese italskymi vojaky. Hrdina pribehu, mlady dustojnik, clovek z intelektualnich kruhu nepripravenych na valku, se vyspi s domorodou divkou a nestastnou nahodou ji smrtelne zrani. Pozdeji se zacne obavat, ze se nakazil leprou a v rozruseni pocituje i jine priznaky malomocenstvi. Dopusti se mnoha ukvapenych cinu, kradeze a zlocinu, a prozije radu dni v mucivem strachu z trestu, ktery neprichazi.
