What is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is produced by the body itself; as a substance of the human organism, it is also known as D-glucosamine. Glucosamine is obtained from the shells of crustaceans such as mussels, crabs and lobsters, and the substance is also found in animal cartilage, bones and tendons. Glucosamine is a component of the amino sugar complex, it consists of glucose and the amino acid glutamine, which have an influence on the regulation of the balance of cartilage build-up and breakdown. This makes glucosamine a basic building block for cartilage, tendons, ligaments and bone structures. Its main effect lies in the formation of cartilage substance and in maintaining the viscosity of the synovial fluid.

What is chondroitin?

Chondroitin sulfate belongs to the group of mucopolysaccharides and is also a natural component of articular cartilage. It gives the joint cartilage its structure and binds the water in the joint. The water binding results in the formation of a viscous, jelly-like substance that both connects the tissue cells and also lubricates the bursa and joints. This ensures elasticity and practically buffers the cartilage. This mass is called synovial fluid or synovial fluid. It is still the nutrient supplier of the cartilage, since it is not supplied with blood and its nutrients cannot be absorbed through the bloodstream. All waste materials from the metabolism leave the joints via the synovial fluid.
