In its first part, this work provides a general cross-section of the East Bohemian resistance in the years 1939–1945. Foresters, forest workers and other men and women occupied an important place in it, for whom the forest was a home, a source of livelihood and love. Help for foresters in solitude find those who had to flee before arrest or total deployment in the Empire, escaped prisoners, members of the crews of shot down aircraft and guerrillas since mid-1944 – the foresters themselves became active members of guerrilla units. Many foresters and their families fell victim to Nazi terror and the struggle for freedom and democracy. The fate of these people, whose lives were connected with life and work in the forests of Eastern Bohemia, their participation in the struggle for the freedom of Czechoslovakia, their patriotism and their victims is recalled in the second part of the book and presents the life stories of twelve of them. The conclusion is dedicated to the memory of foresters who laid down their lives for their homeland.

Tato práce ve své první části podává povšechný průřez východočeským odbojem v letech 1939–1945. V něm zaujímali významné místo lesníci, lesní dělníci a další muži i ženy, kterým byl les domovem, zdrojem obživy a láskou. Pomoc u lesníků na samotách nacházejí ti, kteří museli uprchnout před zatčením nebo před totálním nasazením v Říši, uprchlí zajatci, příslušníci posádek sestřelených letadel a od poloviny roku 1944 partyzáni – sami lesníci se stávali aktivními příslušníky partyzánských oddílů. Mnozí lesníci a jejich rodinní příslušníci se stali oběťmi nacistického teroru i boje za svobodu a demokracii. Osudy těchto lidí, jejichž život byl spjat s životem a prací v lesích východních Čech, jejich účast v boji za svobodu Československa, jejich vlastenectví i oběti připomíná druhá část knihy a uvádí životní příběhy dvanácti z nich. Závěr je věnován památce lesníků, kteří za vlast položili své životy.
