Když v červnu 1941 vtrhla nacistická armáda do sovětského svazu, očekávala německá generalita, že válka bude mít rychlý průběh. nasvědčovalo tomu vše – drtivý postup nacistický obrněných klínů, úspěchy německých jednotek na všech úsecích fronty a v neposlední řadě i zdrcující převaha, kterou měli němečtí piloti nad svými protivníky v letounech s rudými hvězdami na křídlech. Rychlá zkáza sovětských armád se ale nekonala a sověti postupně začali přebírat iniciativu. Na zemi i ve vzduchu, kde se sovětští letci postupně začali svým německým protivníkům vyrovnávat. Letecké boje na východní frontě se nakonec staly počtem nasazených letounů vůbec nejrozsáhlejšími za celou druhou světovou válku. Právě jejich historií se zabývá tato kniha.
