One-sided, throbbing headaches, loss of appetite, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise – the symptoms of a migraine can severely limit the everyday life of those affected. In some cases, a so-called aura announces the recurring attacks, which can be accompanied by visual or speech disorders, tingling, dizziness or paralysis.

There are many causes for migraines: stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes in a woman’s menstrual cycle, the consumption of certain drinks or foods (e.g. coffee, cheese or red wine), skipping a meal if you have not drunk enough, but also certain weather conditions (foehn). The causes themselves are not yet known. Migraines result in excessive stimulation of nerve networks, including the trigeminal nerve. This causes the blood vessels in the brain to expand and become irritated, and ultimately an inflammatory reaction.

In contrast to conventional painkillers, triptans such as NARATRIPTAN AL acute 2.5 mg film-coated tablets specifically counteract this mechanism. They imitate the properties of the body’s own messenger substance serotonin and lead to a constriction of the blood vessels in the meninges. At the same time, they block the release of inflammatory proteins and pain impulses. Since triptans act on a neurological level, they only work for migraines and cluster headaches, not for tension headaches.
