The intestinal bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the most common cause of urinary tract infections. These bacteria are a natural part of the intestinal flora. However, if they enter the bladder via the urethra, they can inflame the bladder mucosa. Typical symptoms occur, such as burning when urinating, painful cramps in the lower abdomen and frequent urges to urinate, with only small amounts of urine being excreted. In rare cases, urinary stones can form during a urinary tract infection. Our bladder’s natural protection against bacteria is slightly acidic urine. The pH value can become unbalanced due to diet, medication, lifestyle habits, stress, lack of sleep and illnesses such as urinary tract infections. If the pH value of the urine is in the alkaline range, bacteria can multiply unchecked. Methionine supports the body’s own protective principle and aims for a urine pH value of less than pH 6. Bacterial growth can be inhibited. An antibiotic is often prescribed for a urinary tract infection. By shifting the pH value in the urine, the effect of an antibiotic, which requires optimum effectiveness in the acidic urine environment (pH 4-6) for therapeutic success, can be improved.
