Scientists have repeatedly highlighted the advantages of charity and volunteering for helping others. This includes getting new information, meeting new people, and feeling happy.
However, working on a charitable basis can also affect how a person is perceived by others, in terms of their appearance. Scientists conducted three studies and found that people rate volunteers and philanthropists as more attractive.
In one study, researchers analyzed a nationally representative sample of U.S. teenagers over several years. It was found that those who volunteered to work for charity were perceived by the interviewees as more attractive.
An inverse relationship was also found. When participants in the experiment evaluated the appearance of teenagers from the sample, those who received the highest score were more likely to be volunteers.
