The book describes the life of a young woman marrying out of love, which soon turns to bitterness.
Alice marries her friend Richard Skala when she finds out she is pregnant. They cannot live with her parents because they lost everything due to their brother, so they start living in Richard’s mother’s villa in the small town of Javorov. Their cohabitation begins to have initial cracks, and when Richard unexpectedly announces at Christmas that he is leaving for Afghanistan on a military mission, he gets the biggest crack.
Alice stays with her young son in her mother-in-law’s house, which does not make the situation any easier for her, and tries to find a way out of seemingly unsolvable difficulties. Jejich spolecne souziti zacina mit pocatecni trhliny, a kdyz o Vanocich Richard necekane oznami, ze odjizdi do Afghanistanu na vojenskou misi, dostane trhlinu nejvetsi.
Alice zustava s malym synem v dome sve tchyne, ktera ji situaci vubec neulehcuje, a snazi se najit vychodisko ze zdanlive neresitelnych nesnazi. Aniz by to chtela nebo planovala, seznami se se svou osudovou laskou, Pavlem. Nemaji to vsak snadne, oba maji jine partnery a smysl pro moralni povinnost. Jejich laska je vsak silna a opojna, ale stejne tak bolestna a spalujici. Zpocatku se snazi tomu velkemu citu branit, ale zjistuji, ze jeden bez druheho nechteji byt.
Navic se blizi cas, kdy se vrati Richard z Afghanistanu. Bude to ale uplne jiny Richard, nez ktereho Alice znala
