The French president from 1959–1969 returns in his memoirs, for example, to his intervention in May 1940 in the fighting against Guderian’s army at Laon during the Nazi invasion of France. This commander of the tank division or secretary for war advocated the continuation of the fighting alongside Great Britain, where he took refuge after the accession of Marshal Petain and where he began to form the French anti-Nazi resistance.
