Lycopene is a carotenoid (like beta carotene) that gives tomatoes their red color. In the body, lycopene is stored in the liver, lungs, prostate, colon and skin. Its concentration in the body’s tissues is usually higher than that of all other carotenoids. In patients taking the lycopene supplement, the prostate tumors contracted and gave a lower level of prostate specific antigen (PSA).
