Chris Ryan was born near Newcastle in 1961. He joined the SAS in 1984. During his ten years with the SAS, he participated in a number of military operations. He participated in the activities of the anti-terrorist team as the commander of the sniper unit. During the first Gulf War, he came to Iraq as a member of an eight-member group assigned to special tasks. The action ended in failure, and Ryan was the only one to escape the pursuers and flee Iraq. Three of his comrades-in-arms perished, four fell into captivity. Ryan’s escape from the enemy is one of the longest individual events in SAS history. For his heroism he received an award, the Military Medal. In the last two years of his service with SAS, he participated in the selection and training of promising SAS soldiers.

He captured his experiences from the first Gulf War in the novel The Only Escape, which was also filmed.

Chris Ryan currently works as a personal protection specialist in the United States.

Chris Ryan se narodil nedaleko Newcastlu v roce 1961. V roce 1984 vstoupil do SAS. Během deseti let své služby u SAS se zúčastnil řady vojenských operací. Podílel se na činnosti protiteroristického týmu jako velitel jednotky odstřelovačů. Během první války v Perském zálivu se dostal do Iráku jako příslušník osmičlenné skupiny pověřené speciálními úkoly. Akce skončila neúspěšně a Ryanovi se jako jedinému podařilo uniknout pronásledovatelům a uprchnout z Iráku. Tři jeho spolubojovníci zahynuli, čtyři padli do zajetí. Ryanův útěk před nepřítelem patří k nejdelším individuálním akcím v historii SAS. Za své hrdinství obdržel vyznamenání, Vojenskou medaili. V posledních dvou letech své služby u SAS se podílel na výběru a výcviku perspektivních vojáků SAS.

Své zážitky z první války v Perském zálivu zachytil v románu Jediný unikl, který byl i zfilmován.

Chris Ryan v současné době pracuje jako odborník na problematiku osobní ochrany ve Spojených státech.
