Today, not very often we manage to look almost directly into the war. Especially when it comes to the First World War. We would therefore like to offer the reader such an insight in the form of an authentic statement of the personal story of one of its participants, who recorded it in his diary. All the more significant is the fact that the author of the notes is none other than Elo (Elemír) Šándor, a Slovak writer and publicist, the author of the three-volume humorous novel Sváko Ragan from Brezová.

In his diary, he describes the combat deployment in the Bukovina area, which is now part of northern Romania and western Ukraine. The troops of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies fought against each other with alternating successes, but with huge losses on both sides.

The introductory chapters describe the situation in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy just before the First World War, as well as the causes of its emergence and the consequences of this war, which affected events not only in Europe but also outside it.

Dnes už nie veľmi často sa nám podarí na­hliadnuť takmer priamo do vojnového diania. A to najmä, ak ide o prvú svetovú vojnu. Chceli by sme preto čitateľovi ponúknuť takéto na­hliadnutie formou autentickej výpovede osobného príbehu jedného z jej účastníkov, ktorý si ho zaznamenával do svojho denníka. O to významnejší je fakt, že autorom zápiskov nie je nikto iný ako Elo (Elemír) Šándor, slovenský spisovateľ a publicista, autor trojzväzkového humoristického románu Sváko Ragan z Brezovej.

Vo svojom denníku opisuje bojové nasadenie v oblasti Bukoviny, ktorá je dnes časťou severného Rumunska a západnej Ukrajiny. Bojovali tu proti sebe vojská rakúsko-uhorskej a ruskej armády so striedavými úspechmi, zato však s obrovskými stratami na oboch stranách.

V úvodných kapitolách je popísaná situácia v rakúsko-uhorskej monarchii tesne pred prvou svetovou vojnou, ako aj príčiny jej vzniku a dôsledky tohto vojnového konfliktu, ktoré ovplyvnili dianie nielen v Európe, ale aj mimo nej.
