Coenzyme Q10 is an endogenous, vitamin-like substance (vitaminoid). It is also called ubiquinone, which indicates its ubiquitous (= everywhere) occurrence in living organisms. Coenzyme Q10 is particularly important as a component of our “cell power plants”, the so-called mitochondria. Here it acts as an electron carrier and thus ensures the supply of energy. In addition, as an antioxidant, coenzyme Q10 can regenerate vitamin E and protect the cells from oxidative stress.

Coenzyme Q10 is therefore not classified as a vitamin because the body can produce it itself under certain conditions. However, from around the age of 40, the ability to do this decreases. Certain drugs can also lead to a coenzyme Q10 deficit. Stress and competitive sport can also increase the need for coenzyme Q10.

Bei Coenzym Q10 handelt es sich um eine körpereigene, vitaminähnliche Substanz (Vitaminoid). Coenzym Q10 ist deshalb nicht als Vitamin eingestuft, da es vom Körper unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen selbst gebildet werden kann. Ab etwa 40 Jahren nimmt die Fähigkeit hierzu allerdings ab. Auch bestimmte Arzneimittel können zu einem Defizit an Coenzym Q10 führen. Stress und Leistungssport können den Coenzym Q10-Bedarf zusätzlich erhöhen.
