After the defeat of the German armies in France in August 1944, it seemed that the end of World War II was at hand and that nothing could stop the victorious Anglo-American troops from advancing into Germany. However, the difficult supply situation of the Allied armies, receding rapidly from the ports of Normandy, did not allow for another attack on the broad front and forced the Allied Command to concentrate its forces in one direction only. In the dispute over the Honor, who will lead the decisive blow to the interior of Germany, British Marshal Montgomery defeated US General Patton and launched Operation Market Garden on September 17, 1944. The aim of the operation was to seize the airborne bridges over the numerous watercourses in the southern Netherlands, especially the crossing of the Rhine, to penetrate the depths of the German defenses with a rapid attack by tank units, thus opening the way for Allied troops to Berlin. Over 5,000 gliders, transport, bombers and fighters secured the landing of 18,000 British and American soldiers on the first day, which was to be followed in the following days by approximately the same number in subsequent waves. Po porážce německých armád ve Francii v srpnu 1944 se zdálo, že konec druhé světové války je již na dosah ruky a že vítězným angloamerickým vojskům nemůže nic zabránit v postupu do Německa. Složitá zásobovací situace spojeneckých armád, vzdalujících se rychle od přístavů v Normandii, však neumožňovala další útok na široké frontě a nutila spojenecké velení k soustředění sil pouze na jediném směru. Ve sporu o Čest, kdo povede rozhodující úder do nitra Německa, zvítězil britský maršál Montgomery nad americkým generálem Pattonem a zahájil 17. září 1944 operaci Market Garden. Cílem operace bylo zmocnit se vzdušnými výsadky mostů přes četné vodní toky v jižním Nizozemí, zvláště přechodu přes Rýn, proniknout rychlým útokem tankových jednotek do hloubky německé obrany, a otevřít tak spojeneckým vojskům cestu na Berlín. Přes 5000 kluzáků, dopravních, bombardovacích a stíhacích letadel zajišťovalo prvního dne výsadek 18 tisíc britských a amerických vojáků, které měl v následujících dnech následovat přibližně stejný počet v dalších vlnách. Svým celkovým rozsahem byla operace Market Garden největší vzdušnou výsadkovou operací druhé světové války…
