Elizabeth Blackwell: The first female physician in America

Elizabeth Blackwell (February 3, 1821-31 May 1910) was the first woman in the United States to graduate from medical school and become a practicing physician. She was also a pioneer in educating women in medicine.

Elizabeth Blackwell was rejected by all the leading schools to which she applied, and almost all other schools, as well. When her application arrived at the Geneva Medical College in Geneva, New York, the administration asked the students to decide whether to recognize her or not. Students reportedly approved its recognition, believing it was only a joke.

When they discovered that it was serious, both students and residents were terrified. She had few allies and was an outcast in Geneva. First, she even kept medical demonstrations in the classroom, as unacceptable for a woman. Most students, however, became friends, impressed by her ability and perseverance.

Elizabeth Blackwell graduated first in her class in January 1849, becoming the first woman to graduate from a medical school and the first female doctor of medicine in the modern era.

She decided to continue her studies and, after being a naturalized citizen of the United States, she went to England.

After a short stay in England, Elizabeth Blackwell entered the midwifery training in La Maternity in Paris. While there, she suffered from a serious eye infection that left her blind in one eye and she gave up her plan to become a surgeon.

From Paris, she returned to England and worked at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital with Dr. James Pedget. It was on this trip that she met and became friends with Florence Nightingale.

In 1851, Elizabeth Blackwell returned to New York, where hospitals and dispensaries evenly refused her association. She even refused office space for landlords and when she wanted to create a private practice, she had to buy a house to start her practice.

She began to see a woman and child in her home. She developed her practice, she also writes a lecture on health, which she published in 1852, as the laws of life; with special reference to physical education for girls.

In 1853, Elizabeth Blackwell opened a pharmacy in the slums of New York City. Later she was admitted to the dispensary for her sister Emily Blackwell, recently graduated from medical school, and Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, an immigrant from Poland, whom Elizabeth encouraged in her medical education. A number of leading male physicians have supported their clinic by acting as consultants.

Determined to avoid marriage, Elizabeth Blackwell nevertheless sought a family and in 1854 took in an orphan, Katharine Barry, known as Kitty. They remained companions in Elizabeth’s old age.

In 1857, the sisters of Blackwell and Dr. Zakrzewska included the dispensary as New York infirmary for women and children. Zakrzewska left after two years in Boston, but not before Elizabeth Blackwell went to a year-long British lecture. At that time, she was the first woman to have her name on the British medical register (January 1859). These lectures and her personal example inspired several women to take medicine as a profession.

When Elizabeth Blackwell returned to the United States in 1859, she resumed work from the infirmary. During the civil war, the Blackwell nurses helped to organize the Women’s Central Relief Association, select and train nurses to work in the war. This enterprise helped inspire the creation of the United States Sanitation Commission, and Blackwells worked with this organization as well.

Elizabeth Blackwells had a profound impact on women’s progress in medicine. Together with her sister Emily, she opened an infirmary for women in New York. She has also traveled throughout the United States and England, giving lectures on women in medicine; in her life, she has personally been influenced by hundreds of women to enter the medical profession. Along with Florence Nightingale, she worked during the Civil War to provide care for the wounded and, with Nightingale and others, opened the first medical school for women in England.
