How do mercury thermometers differ from electronic ones
All thermometers that are suitable for medical use can be divided into two large groups: contact and contactless.

Contact thermometers measure the temperature on the surface or inside the human body: under the arm, in the mouth and anus, that is, rectally. They can be mercury, alcohol and electronic.

A mercury thermometer is a sealed tube with a ball of mercury, behind which a calibration ruler is located. All this is in a glass tube.

Under the influence of heat, mercury expands, and in about 7 minutes reaches a value that corresponds to the patient’s body temperature. Mercury does not stick to the walls of the bulb, reacts sensitively to the slightest changes in heat and gives the same readings for several measurements in a row.

Mercury thermometers are considered very accurate — for a long time it was the gold standard for measuring temperature. However, the thermometer can break — as a result, the person who uses it risks not only being injured by shrapnel, but also being poisoned by mercury vapor. Therefore, alternative thermometers have been developed as a replacement for mercury thermometers: alcohol and electronic.

Alcohol thermometers look very similar to mercury thermometers, but inside they do not have mercury, but tinted alcohol. Alcohol does not react as well to temperature changes as mercury, and in addition it moistens the walls of the flask. Because of this, not all alcohol reaches the drawings that correspond to the desired temperature. Therefore, alcohol thermometers are considered less accurate than mercury thermometers.

An electronic thermometer is a plastic case, in the tip of which a thermistor is hidden — a metal plate with a coating of nickel, cobalt or copper oxide. When the device is turned on, a small battery inside the thermometer begins to pass current through it.

The higher the temperature around the thermistor, the worse it passes an electric current through itself. This signal gets to the processing unit, which processes the data and displays the temperature on the screen. High-quality thermistors are no less sensitive to temperature than mercury. So a serviceable and high-quality electronic thermometer should show a temperature no worse than mercury.
