The novel The Valley of Seven Months from 1960 (published in Czech in 1963) is based, like the author’s most famous novel The Hour of the Dead Eyes, on the author’s experiences during childhood and adolescence in Upper Silesia, where the German and Polish populations intermingled. The plot of the novel is strongly focused on the benefit of Polish workers, which corresponded to the way of ideological presentation of the East German regime, but the author does not fall into ideological schemes and clichés, demonstrates excellent storytelling talent and the ability to present a captivating story.

Román Údolí sedmi měsíců z roku 1960 (česky vyšel v roce 1963) vychází, stejně jako autorův nejslavnější román Hodina mrtvých očí, z autorových prožitků během dětství a dospívání v oblasti Horního Slezska, kde se prolínalo německé a polské obyvatelstvo. Děj románu je výrazně zaměřen ve prospěch polského dělnictva, což odpovídalo způsobu ideové prezentace východoněmeckého režimu, autor však neupadá do ideologických schémat a klišé, prokazuje vynikající vypravěčský talent a schopnost prezentace strhujícího příběhu.
