Marshal Radecky’s Italian Patalia (First War for the Liberation of Italy 1848-1849), Italske patalie marsala Radeckeho (Prvni valka za osvobozeni Italie 1848–1849), Lubos Taraba

The history of the so-called first war for the unification of Italy includes a series of dramatic events, from unexpected street fighting during the “Five Days in Milan” in March 1848, through the Imperial Army under the command of Field Marshal Václav Radecký of Radče after the lightning five-day war in the following year, when Radecký’s rival, King Charles Albert of Sardinia, was definitively defeated in March 1849 at Novara. Detailed descriptions of the course of the campaign and decisive battles are complemented not only by insider analyzes of the organization of both armies, their training and the way of fighting, but also by the engaging characteristics of the main actors in the conflict. The author does not forget the everyday averted face of the war, often affecting equally simple soldiers and the local population. He also recalls that somewhere in distant Italy there were men from Bohemia and Moravia under Habsburg battalions, who often sealed their oath to the Austrian emperor with their own blood, even though future generations should have forgotten them.

Historie tzv. prvni valky za sjednoceni Italie zahrnuje sled dramatickych udalosti, pocinaje ne- cekanymi poulicnimi boji behem „peti dnu v Milanu“ v breznu 1848, pres tazeni Cisarskeho vojska pod velenim polniho marsala Vaclava Radeckeho z Radce, vrcholici cervencovou bitvou u Custozy, az po bleskovou peti- denni valku v roce nasledujicim, kdy byl Radeckeho souper, sardinsky kral Karel Albert, definitivne porazen v breznu 1849 u Novary. Podrobne liceni prubehu tazeni a rozhodujicich bitev doplnuji nejen zasvecene analyzy organizace obou armad, jejich vycviku a zpusobu vedeni boje, ale take poutave charakteristiky hlavnich akteru konfliktu. Autor nezapomina ani na kazdodenni odvracenou tvar valky, zasahujici mnohdy stejnou merou proste vojaky i mistni obyvatelstvo. Pripomina take, ze pod habsburskymi prapory tam nekde v daleke Italii nechybeli muzi z Cech a Moravy, kteri casto zpecetili svou prisahu rakouskemu cisari vlastni krvi, byt na ne dalsi generace mely prave proto zapomenout.
