The bioavailability of curcumin
One of the challenges with curcumin supplementation is its bioavailability. Even with high doses of curcumin alone, only trace amounts enter the body, and this is because curcumin has a rapid turnover in the liver and intestinal walls. Most substances of plant origin, including glycoside derivatives of polyphenols such as curcumin, dissolve well in water. However, it is insufficiently absorbed due to the too large size of the molecule, the inability to penetrate by passive diffusion or the inability to mix and dissolve in the lipids of cell membranes.
