Hermann Göring is associated primarily with the deeds and crimes he committed in 1933-1945 as one of the highest leaders of the Third Reich, but his activities during the First World War were overlooked. The American historian Peter Kilduff created a major work based on intensive research into Göring’s early military records, including his own combat reports, related documents, and thousands of German and treaty documents. His book is therefore a thorough study that describes him as a military pilot and commander during the First World War, and presents the experience that shapes the personality of a man who gained world attention in the ensuing war.
At the beginning of the war, Göring eagerly tried to prove his homeland’s value in initial clashes with French troops. When he suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis in September 1914, the 21-year-old officer was burning with ambition and could not afford to be on the sidelines. The following month, he began his new career as an aviation observer. Subsequently, he became a fighter pilot, who scored 22 recognized victories over enemy aircraft, and was the last war commander of the Red Baron’s fighter squadron, Jagdgeschwader Freiherr von Richthofen Nr. I, and holder of prestigious decorations, including the highest Prussian / German order for bravery, Pour le Mérite.
