Milk production usually begins 2 to 3 days after delivery. If you breastfeed, you’ll produce about 300 to 500 ml of milk a day in the first week. This amount may increase to 600-700 ml per day, depending on the child’s needs.
The amount of milk produced, its composition and nutrient content depend significantly on your lifestyle and diet. In addition, breastfeeding is a burden on your body, increasing the need for energy and nutrients.
During breastfeeding, the dietary demand for some nutrients increases. For example, special care should be taken to ensure adequate supply of omega-3 DHA.
* Mother’s consumption of DHA contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the fetus and the breastfed infant. The beneficial effect occurs when consuming 200 mg DHA daily above the recommended daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids for adults, i.e. 250 mg (DHA and EPA).
