At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, an adventurous and engaging story takes place, the plot of which is presented in the form of witness stories. The main character, Captain Tatham, is a brave and determined man who, despite numerous obstacles and conspiracies, makes his dream come true by all possible means. He is building a self-sufficient community on a remote, steep-walled, gold-bearing island. This is officially recognized as an independent parliamentary republic, of which he becomes president, after skilful political negotiations with representatives of the powers and with the help of his wife Eva.
