The Allied bombing campaign against the war machinery of Nazi Germany is a unique event in history. It was the first time that military forces could attempt to destroy such a scale from the heavenly heights. And it was the first time that advanced technology had allowed such an astonishing number of bombers to be used to achieve this goal.
The strategic bombing offensive was not one of the most frequently photographed events. Official films and pictures of airplanes, personnel and air raids were limited by the very fact of the madness of war life and, no less in the case of the RAF, by the fact that its air raids took place mainly at night. The use of personal cameras and camcorders has been banned, but has existed, and gives future generations a better insight into how the bomber squadrons operated. Which is, after all, the basic goal of this pictorial publication – to outline the everyday dramas of the days and years of that time.

Spojenecká bombardovací kampaň namířená proti válečné mašinérii nacistického Německa představuje ojedinělou událost v dějinách. Bylo to vůbec poprvé, kdy se vojenské síly mohly pokusit o destrukci takového rozsahu z nebeských výšin. A bylo to vůbec poprvé, kdy pokročilá technika dovolila použít tak ohromující množství bombardovacích letounů k dosažení tohoto cíle.
Strategická bombardovací ofenzíva nepatřila k hojně fotografovaným událostem. Oficiální filmy a snímky letounů, personálu a náletů byly limitovány samotným faktem šílenství válečného života a neméně v případě RAF i faktem, že jeho nálety probíhaly převážně v noci. Používání osobních fotoaparátů a kamer bylo zakázáno, leč existovalo, a umožňuje následujícím generacím lepší vhled do toho, jak bombardovací perutě operovaly. Což je koneckonců i základním cílem této obrazové publikace – nastínit každodenní dramata tehdejších dní a roků.
