After the defeat of the German armies in France in August 1944, it seemed that the end of World War II was at hand and that nothing could stop the victorious Anglo-American troops from advancing into Germany. However, the difficult supply situation of the Allied armies, receding rapidly from the ports of Normandy, did not allow for another attack on the broad front and forced the Allied Command to concentrate its forces in one direction only. In the dispute over the Honor, who will lead the decisive blow to the interior of Germany, British Marshal Montgomery defeated US General Patton and launched Operation Market Garden on September 17, 1944. The aim of the operation was to seize the airborne bridges over the numerous watercourses in the southern Netherlands, especially the crossing of the Rhine, to penetrate the depths of the German defenses with a rapid attack by tank units, thus opening the way for Allied troops to Berlin. Over 5,000 gliders, transport, bombers and fighters secured the landing of 18,000 British and American soldiers on the first day, which was to be followed in the following days by approximately the same number in subsequent waves. Po porazce nemeckych armad ve Francii v srpnu 1944 se zdalo, ze konec druhe svetove valky je jiz na dosah ruky a ze viteznym angloamerickym vojskum nemuze nic zabranit v postupu do Nemecka. Slozita zasobovaci situace spojeneckych armad, vzdalujicich se rychle od pristavu v Normandii, vsak neumoznovala dalsi utok na siroke fronte a nutila spojenecke veleni k soustredeni sil pouze na jedinem smeru. Ve sporu o Cest, kdo povede rozhodujici uder do nitra Nemecka, zvitezil britsky marsal Montgomery nad americkym generalem Pattonem a zahajil 17. zari 1944 operaci Market Garden. Cilem operace bylo zmocnit se vzdusnymi vysadky mostu pres cetne vodni toky v jiznim Nizozemi, zvlaste prechodu pres Ryn, proniknout rychlym utokem tankovych jednotek do hloubky nemecke obrany, a otevrit tak spojeneckym vojskum cestu na Berlin. Pres 5000 kluzaku, dopravnich, bombardovacich a stihacich letadel zajistovalo prvniho dne vysadek 18 tisic britskych a americkych vojaku, ktere mel v nasledujicich dnech nasledovat priblizne stejny pocet v dalsich vlnach. Svym celkovym rozsahem byla operace Market Garden nejvetsi vzdusnou vysadkovou operaci druhe svetove valky…
