After the defeat of the German armies in France in August 1944, it seemed that the end of World War II was at hand and that nothing could stop the victorious Anglo-American troops from advancing into Germany. However, the difficult supply situation of the Allied armies, receding rapidly from the ports of Normandy, did not allow for another attack on the broad front and forced the Allied Command to concentrate its forces in one direction only. In the dispute over the Honor, who will lead the decisive blow to the interior of Germany, British Marshal Montgomery defeated US General Patton and launched Operation Market Garden on September 17, 1944. The aim of the operation was to seize the airborne bridges over the numerous watercourses in the southern Netherlands, especially the crossing of the Rhine, to penetrate the depths of the German defenses with a rapid attack by tank units, thus opening the way for Allied troops to Berlin.
