In order to digest food, gastric juice is released into the inner cavity of the stomach. In addition to important enzymes, gastric juice also contains hydrochloric acid. The stomach itself is lined with a mucous membrane which protects the stomach walls from the aggressive acid. In the case of heartburn, also known as acid reflux, the food comes back out of the stomach with some gastric juice and irritates the esophagus. This process is accompanied by burning, oppressive pain behind the breastbone, sometimes also by coughing and difficulty breathing or swallowing. If the reflux symptoms cannot be alleviated, e.g. by changing your lifestyle, additional medication such as PANTOPRAZOL AL 20 mg can be considered. PANTOPRAZOL AL 20 mg is suitable for the short-term treatment of reflux symptoms such as heartburn. If no relief of symptoms has been achieved after 2 weeks of continuous treatment, a doctor should be consulted.
