Achiote is a tree growing to a height of up to 5 meters. The leaves are oval and pointed. Achiote fruits are thorny, egg-shaped capsules the size of an egg, pointed and longer than wider. Inside the Achiote fruit there are bright red small seeds with a diameter of about 5 mm, covered with seed pollen, which are used not only in medicinal products but also as a colorant and not only in the food industry. Achiote occurs in the lowlands of South and Central America and has been used in indigenous medicine for millennia, especially the leaves and seeds of Achiote.

Achiote je strom dorůstající do výšky až 5 metrů. Listy jsou oválné a zašpičatělé. Plody Achiote jsou trnité tobolky vejčitého tvaru o velikosti vejce, zašpičatělé a delší než širší. Uvnitř plodu Achiote se nachází jasně červená malá semínka o průměru cca 5 mm, pokrytá semenným pylem, která se mimo léčivých přípravků užívají i jako barvivo a ne jenom v potravinářství. Achiote se vyskytuje v nížinných oblastech Jižní a Střední Ameriky a po tisíciletí se užívá v domorodém léčitelství, zejména pak listy a semena Achiote.
