Maintaining an acidic vaginal environment is important because it inhibits the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and supports the development of a healthy intimate microflora. At low pH, the development of colon bacilli and the spread of Candida yeasts in the vaginal epithelium becomes restricted. Trichomoniasis virulence factors are also neutralized.
