Karl Landsteiner was born on June 14, 1868 in Baden near Vienna[8] [9], in a Jewish family of Moravian origin

Winner of the Nobel prize (1930) Karl Landsteiner in the company of the Swedish Queen of light, Lucia, who in Sweden is chosen by children on the Feast of Saint Lucia (December 13) on the eve of Christmas.

In 1891-1896, he became interested in chemistry, which he studied for 5 years, practicing in würzburg, Munich and Zurich.

In 1896, he returned to Vienna and got a job as an assistant at the Vienna Institute of hygiene. In the same year, he found that laboratory cultures of bacteria can be agglutinated by adding immune serum.

From 1898 he worked at the Department of pathological anatomy at the University of Vienna. His mentors were Professor A. Weichselbaum, who established the bacterial nature of meningitis, and A. Frenkel, who discovered pneumococci (Frenkel’s diplococcus). During this time, he became interested in immunology.

In 1900, Landsteiner, then an assistant at the Vienna Institute of pathology, took blood from himself and five of his employees, separated the serum from the red blood cells using a centrifuge, and mixed individual samples of red blood cells with the blood serum of different individuals and with his own. In collaboration with L. Yansky, Landsteiner divided all blood samples into three groups based on the presence or absence of agglutination: A, B, and 0. Two years later, Landsteiner’s students A. Sturli and A. Decastello discovered the fourth blood group — AB. Drawing attention to the fact that their own blood serum does not agglutinate with “their” red blood cells, the scientist concluded, known today as the immutable Landsteiner rule: “in the human body, the blood group antigen (agglutinogen) and antibodies to it (agglutinins) never coexist.” Landsteiner received the Nobel prize in 1930 for his discoveries.

In 1908-1911, while working as chief pathologist at the Royal Wilgenin hospital in Vienna, Landsteiner focused on the study of polio.

In 1909, together with S. Popper, he proved the infectious nature of polio.

In 1911, he became a Professor at the University of Vienna.

In 1916, he married Helen Vlasto. In 1917, they had a son, Ernest Karl.

During the first world war, he emigrated to the Netherlands.

In 1922, he was invited to head the laboratory at the Rockefeller Institute center for medical research (new York).

In 1927-1928, under his leadership, as well as with the participation of A. Wiener and F. Levin, the antigenic systems of human red blood cells were discovered: MN and P.

In 1939, at the age of 70, he received an honorary position at the Rockefeller Institute “Distinguished Professor in retirement”, but continued to work. It was during this period, in 1939-1942, under his leadership, A. Wiener-one of the most talented students, discovered a new system of Rh-Hr antigens, for the discovery and study of which he, Landsteiner, F. Levin and J. Mahoney received the albert Lasker prize in clinical medical research (1946).
On June 24, 1943, Landsteiner had a severe attack of angina in the laboratory at his Desk. He was hospitalized in the hospital of the Rockefeller Institute. Two days later, on June 26, 1943, he died.
