This medication contains minoxidil, a substance that stimulates hair growth and slows hair loss when applied to the scalp. Minoxidil is also an oral vasodilator used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Applied locally to the scalp, the antihypertensive effect of minoxidil is generally imperceptible.
