The 13th SS Handjar Weapons Division consisted largely of 15,000 Bosnian Muslims who volunteered. The division was built in March 1943 and deployed in northeastern Bosnia against Tito’s guerrillas and Serbian gendarmes. The training first took place in southern France and then in the Neuhammer am Queis military training area (now Świętoszów nad Kwisou) in Silesia. During training in southern France, a riot took place in Villefranche-de-Rouergue, led by two Croatian and two Bosnian communists, in which five German officers were shot dead. The uprising was suppressed after several hours.

The author evaluated the data on this event for many years and interviewed witnesses of that time. As one of the last survivors, he further describes the reasons for the creation of this single “non-German” SS unit and the role of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Hussein. The great mufti’s collaboration with the Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler still causes many heated discussions about the relationship between Islam and National Socialism.

13. divize Zbraní SS „Handžár“ sestávala z větší části z 15 000 bosenských muslimů, kteří se přihlásili dobrovolně. Divize byla postavena v březnu 1943 a nasazena v severovýchodní Bosně proti Titovým partyzánům a srbským četnikům. Výcvik nejdříve probíhal v jižní Francii a potom ve vojenském výcvikovém prostoru Neuhammer am Queis (dnes Świętoszów nad Kwisou) ve Slezsku. Během výcviku v jižní Francii došlo ve městě Villefranche-de-Rouergue pod vedením dvou chorvatských a dvou bosenských komunistů ke vzpouře, při níž bylo zastřeleno pět německých důstojníků. Vzpoura byla po několika hodinách potlačena.

Autor k této události dlouhá léta vyhodnocoval podklady a zpovídal svědky oné doby. Jako jeden z posledních přeživších dále popisuje důvody vzniku této jediné „neněmecké“ jednotky SS a roli jeruzalémského velkého muftího, Amína al-Husajního. Spolupráce velkého muftího s Reichsführerem-SS Heinrichem Himmlerem je dodnes příčinou mnoha ostrých diskuzí o vztahu islámu a nacionálního socialismu.
