The most familiar makeup product went through a long and amazing story before it appeared in our cosmetics in its modern form
Women painted their lips back in ancient Egypt. However, lipstick in the modern sense appeared at the end of the 19th century. But until 1915, lipstick lived exclusively on toilet tables. Until the American company Scovill Manufacturing Company released the first lipstick in a case with small levers, which could be extended from the tube. In 1923, a case appeared from which it was possible to twist out a mallet.
In the 1920s, Tangee lipstick appeared, which adjusted to the natural shade of the lips, making it brighter. The Americans swept her off the shelves. During the Great Depression, the concept of “lipstick effect” appeared.
People did not have money for large purchases – then industrial production in the United States was halved, and the profit of cosmetics companies, on the contrary, increased.
In the late 1940s, the first persistent lipstick appeared. It was developed by the American chemist Hazel Bishop.
In the 1990s, lipstick was almost forgotten. Lip gloss came into fashion, the accent turned to the eyes.
But at the beginning of the XXI century there was a new round of popularity of lipstick. New textures and formulas appeared, persistent lipstick ceased to dry the lips, and the caring components in the composition became the norm.
