A urinary tract infection is inflammation of the lining that lines the urinary tract inside. Urinary tracts are organs that carry the urine collected in the kidneys out of the body (ureters, bladder, urethra). If the person becomes infected, the bacteria migrate up the urethra into the bladder, where they cause cystitis. If they also climb up the ureters, ureter inflammation and possibly also kidney inflammation develop.
Urinary tract infections are usually triggered by intestinal bacteria that enter the urinary tract after defecation due to improper hygiene. In bedridden people, urinary catheters are also to blame for the development of a bladder infection. Other causes are a weak immune system, certain metabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus) and urinary tract organs blocked by tumors, an enlarged prostate or urinary stones.
The inflamed mucous membranes are red and swollen. The patient feels burning and stabbing pain when urinating. In the worst case scenario, there is protein and blood in the urine, chills and a fever. Mild cases of urinary tract infections can be treated with the appropriate antibiotics. With complicated inflammation, the recovery process takes longer.
Kidney grits can also be a problem for patients. The insoluble crystals, the size of a grain of sand, accumulate in the kidney and agglomerate to form kidney stones if insufficient amounts are excreted in the urine. Patients who drink too little are mainly at risk.
The tiny crystals consist of the chemical substances that are permanently present in excessive amounts in the urine. Outgoing kidney stones can block the ureter and cause discomfort in the bladder. The affected person then has severe colic-like pain in the lower abdomen and back.
Slight inflammation of the lower urinary tract can be effectively combated with old natural remedies. Treatment with the tried and tested combination of centaury, lovage root and rosemary leaves is usually a supportive drug therapy.

Lovage also has a diuretic effect, so that kidney gravel and smaller urinary stones pass more quickly. The camphor contained in rosemary leaves has a calming, antibacterial, antispasmodic and analgesic effect.

Indikation und Anwendung
Eine Harnwegsinfektion ist eine Entzündung der Schleimhaut, die die ableitenden Harnwege innen auskleidet. Harnwege sind Organe, die den in den Nieren gesammelten Urin aus dem Körper befördern (Harnleiter, Blase, Harnröhre). Infiziert sich der Betroffene, wandern die Bakterien die Harnröhre hinauf in die Blase, wo sie eine Blasenentzündung verursachen. Steigen sie auch noch die Harnleiter hoch, kommt es zu einer Harnleiterentzündung und möglicherweise auch zur Nierenentzündung.
Harnwegsinfektionen werden meist durch Darmbakterien ausgelöst, die durch falsche Hygiene nach der Darmentleerung in den Harntrakt gelangen. Bei Bettlägerigen sind mitunter auch Blasenkatheter an der Entstehung einer Blasenentzündung schuld. Andere Ursachen sind ein schwaches Immunsystem, bestimmte Stoffwechselerkrankungen (Diabetes mellitus) und durch Tumoren, eine Prostatavergrößerung oder Harnsteine blockierte Harnwegsorgane.
Die entzündeten Schleimhäute sind gerötet und angeschwollen. Der Kranke verspürt beim Wasserlassen Brennen und stechenden Schmerz. Im schlimmsten Fall kommt es zu Eiweiß und Blut im Urin, Schüttelfrost und Fieber. Leichte Fälle von Harnwegsinfektionen lassen sich mit den geeigneten Antibiotika therapieren. Bei komplizierten Entzündungen dauert der Genesungsprozess länger.
Auch Nierengrieß kann für Patienten zum Problem werden. Die sandkorngroßen unlöslichen Kristalle sammeln sich in der Niere an und ballen sich zu Nierensteinen zusammen, wenn sie in nur unzureichender Menge über den Harn ausgeschieden werden.
